Hydro Electric

The goal for any sealing system in the Hydro-electric industry is very simple… keep the oil in and the water out.

Eraseal stands with Original Equipment Manufacturers, Power providers, Engineers and Maintenance personnel to make the goal a reality. We will work with you to provide the best sealing solution for every application.

Our experience has encompassed Kaplan, Francis, Bulb, Reversible Pump and Pelton unit designs.

Main Turbine Shaft Seal

We offer a range of braided packing with the common styles being loaded Teflon or graphite based materials offering excellent sealing and low breakaway dynamic during start-up. Smaller shaft units were designed to use spring energized rotary lip seals. Eraseal will provide a custom size rotary lip seal to the requirement using the most technologically advanced materials available.

Adjustable Kaplan Blade Seals

BladeSeal Dual

BladeSeal Dual is a robust one piece bi-directional seal designed with dual profiled lip sections of Acrylonitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR) elastomer. The dual sealing lips on each end of the element are fully molded to the center section of our fabric reinforced NBR composite forming the single unitized bi-directional seal unit.

Our specialty blended NBR Nitrile has been formulated to withstand the attacks posed by most lubricating media used in hydro units while providing excellent resistance to the wide array of elements found in today’s water supplies. BladeSeal Dual will remain fully functional in all temperature ranges encountered by Kaplan turbines.

The fabric reinforced NBR center section works as the anti-extrusion element for BladeSeal Dual. The strong woven fabric is more than tough enough to eliminate stretching and bunching during shaft rotation.

BladeSeal Dual is custom designed and manufactured to your actual hardware dimensions. BladeSeal Dual is offered in endless form for new equipment or in split form for much improved replacement seals in existing equipment.

When ordered in Split form, BladeSeal Dual comes with the Diamond Z cut along with an internal alignment tab to insure perfect lip alignment.

Blade removal is not required for installation. The unique one piece design allows the seal to remain flexible enough to manipulate as needed during installation and makes it virtually impossible to accidentally twist the seal while working into a blind housing. Multiple element seals are notorious for roll over and twisting during installation in the field.

BladeSeal Dual’s unique design provides positive load pressure maintaining sealing integrity even in older equipment suffering from blade droop. BladeSeal Dual is designed to float within the housing rather than be under harsh and sometimes too much compression. This allows the sealing lips to perform without the excessive frictional drag and associated wear of compression style seals. The deep pocket design and unsurpassed material memory characteristics work in concert to maintain seal integrity as the equipment ages and the blades experience gravitational sag due to worn bushings.

BladeSeal Twin

BladeSeal Twin is a robust seal set offering all the same features as our BladeSeal Dual in a 2 part mirror image composition.  BladeSeal Twin components are designed to be installed in a Back-to-Back configuration. Together, these components provide a system of positive sealing in both directions with the strength and stability needed within the hardware cavity.

Back to Back Vee Packing

This style of packing is manufactured using all specialized rubber compounds that are fully molded to diametric size & height specifications which eliminates the old “match marking” installation process. This design also offers double sealing redundancy in both directions using a bi-directional center gland ring. Back to Back Vee Packing sets are supplied in split form. The intermediate rings are cut at a standard 45 degree angle while the center gland ring has a “Diamond Cut” providing the best surface contact available in a split style seal. The all specialized rubber design is utilized to avoid possible shrinkage sometimes encountered with standard rubber coated fabric seal rings. They also function better in colder water applications and are more responsive to the low pressure environments.

Floating Back to Back Vee Packing

Floating Back to Back Vee Packing provides the same performance as our standard Back to Back style but does not require calculated compression on the seals to operate. The double redundancy and bi-directional ring, the Diamond Cut split and total specialized rubber compounds are all maintained in this design. Endless sets are always recommended for OEM new equipment builds, total rebuilds or designs which allow the installation. Due to installation restraints, typical replacement seal sets are supplied in split form. Split seals can be joined using our specialized elastomer adhesive thus making it an endless seal set in the field.

Floating U-cup Seals

Floating U-Cup seals are used in applications with a shallow packing box. These seals are also installed in a back to back position and are manufactured to allow minimal seal float in the cavity without the need for calculated seal compression.

Wicket Gates

Wicket gates require a seal set responsive to low pressure activation. Eraseal recommends utilizing an elastomeric intermediates and header seal design for the best low pressure responsiveness. Endless sets are always recommended for OEM new equipment builds, total rebuilds or designs which allow the installation. Due to installation restraints, typical replacement seal sets would be supplied in split form. Split seals can be joined using our specialized elastomer adhesive thus making it an endless seal set in the field.

Brakes

Many hydro-electric braking systems share the common problem of the brakes not fully retracting. Braking systems require a seal design that is responsive to low pressure (air) and then to high pressure (oil). Hardware designs have varied greatly over the years ranging from standard stuffing boxes to cavities with custom base geometries. Eraseal will review the application with your engineers and maintenance personnel to determine the best possible sealing solution.

Servo Motors

Eraseal Floating Vee Packing is the recommended seal design for positive performance in Servo Motors. The split seal design offers the “Diamond Cut” split providing the best surface contact available in a split style seal. Standard Vee Packing also works well for those who prefer using a compression style seal set.

Spherical Valve Seals

Eraseal recommends using fully-molded D-rings for optimum performance. D-rings eliminate the chance of a twist or spiral in the seal going undetected during installation. D-rings provide a larger contact area than o-rings and fit more securly into the gland pocket. We also offer fully molded large diameter o-rings for spherical valve seals. However, we do not recommend using extruded o-ring cord which will require being glued together in the field.
